A FEW WORDS FROM JORG....
My philosophy on training dogs from general obedience to Personal Protection: there are
3T's in obedience training that I strictly adhere to : TEACHING -- TRAINING -- TESTING --
sounds very simple but lots of trainers already fail in the most basic beginnings, you can not
train unless you know how to teach.
For a young green beginner dog (aprox. 6 months) my time is roughly used as follows: 20%
teaching -- 79% training -- 1% testing.
If properly taught and trained, testing in a sense becomes obsolete. In on/off leash
obedience, if you still need physical or verbal corrections at the close of your obedience
training program, your dog is not trained...PERIOD!!
MY DEMANDS ARE: wrap around heeling, immediate and fast sit...down...extremely fast
recall and 20 minutes down stay under distractions. PS I do not train dogs under 40 ilbs.
Protection Training; be it personal or police.....what I look for in a dog for this kind of work at
aprox. 9-12 months old is the following: HARD temperament -- Strong defensive drive --
Natural full mouth bite and extreme amount of working drive -- with this combination there is
no limit how far you can take your dog!!
You may have noticed I have not mentioned color or looks, these 2 items have absolutely no
bearing on how your dog is going to work for and protect you. You may ask where is this
kind of dog available... and in North Florida & South Georgia I know of only one kennel that
knows how to breed & raise these types of puppies...Slough Bottom Kennel -- Lisa has
proven to me that she can breed dogs for this type of work, I have since trained several of
her dogs.
Why are some bloodlines better suited for personal protection/police K9 than others?
Clearly working dog bloodlines are far superior to conformation/show bloodlines. In GS
dogs especially conformation/show breeders have done this breed a huge disservice by
breeding strong temperament and protective instincts with solid nerves out of these animals
along with their ridiculous love for extreme angulation of the rear end. These dogs today
can not fulfill the work the breed was intended for. You don't see anybody on the NASCAR
circuit putting smaller tires on the rear axle than they have at the front. What can one do to
avoid buying a puppy that is not able to do the job later on? Stay away from conformation
breeders or schutzhund breeders that have heavy conformation titles (ie. VA and V-rated
titles) in their bloodlines. Buy from breeders that have strictly working lines or IPO lines in
their pedigrees. Conformation bloodlines should at least be 2 years removed from a litter of
puppies you intend to buy from. Remember it's not the good looks of the dog that will
protect you, but strictly whats in his/her heart!
Besides training we also provide the following services..Pre-purchase evaluation of a puppy
you may intend to buy -- Pre-purchase evaluation of a young started dog you may intend to
buy -- Pre-purchase evaluating and testing of a trained personal protection or police k9 or
schutzhund dog you may intend to buy. Translation of pedigrees from German or French
into English.
